天然食物中也存在著豐富的輔酶Q10,如動物內臟、沙丁魚及一般肉類都含有;植物種子如花生、芝麻等也含有豐富的輔酶Q10。導致體內輔酶Q10降低的主要原因包括: a) 營養不均:無法由飲食中直接提供足夠的輔酶Q10及體內合成輔酶Q10的營養素─酪胺酸、維生素B群及多種微量元素等。 b) 體內合成輔酶Q10的生理機制不正常或減退(例如:年齡增長),無法合成足夠的輔酶Q10。 c) 生理機制消耗輔酶Q10的速率比一般人高,因此需求量也比較高。 d) 藥物影響。研究發現,服用statin類藥物會使體內輔酶Q10的濃度下降,帶來副作用,所以許多歐美的心臟科醫生建議服用statin類藥物的同時,應該同時補充輔酶Q10以減少危險的副作用。2
